Farming for a Healthier Future 🌿🚜
The Lake District Foundation, on behalf of the Love Windermere partnership, recently hosted a Farm Engagement Supper. The event brought together farmers, land managers, and environmental experts to discuss the progress of vital conservation work in the Windermere catchment. It was an opportunity to celebrate achievements, share knowledge, and strengthen collaborations that support sustainable farming and improved water quality.
An Evening of insight and collaboration
Set against the backdrop of a shared commitment to protecting Windermere, the evening began with a warm welcome and a delicious
meal, fostering an atmosphere of open discussion and connection. Farmers and land managers play a crucial role in maintaining the health of the landscape, and this event provided a platform to explore innovative solutions to environmental challenges.
The highlight of the evening was a presentation by Paul Arkle of Cumbria Farm Environment Partnership, an experienced Farm Environment Advisor with over 25 years of expertise supporting farms across Cumbria and beyond. Paul provided a catchment-wide soil health summary, offering valuable insights into soil management, nutrient runoff reduction, and best practices for sustainable land stewardship. His expertise helped attendees understand the direct link between farming practices and water quality, reinforcing the importance of working together to protect Windermere’s delicate ecosystem.
Funding sustainable farming solutions
One of the most exciting aspects of the event was sharing the impact of £125,000 in funding, secured by the Lake District Foundation through Westmorland and Furness Council and Farming in Protected Landscapes. These funds are being used to support local farmers in adopting sustainable land management practices that reduce nutrient runoff into Windermere, directly improving water quality while ensuring productive, resilient farmland for future generations. The funding has already contributed to practical on-the-ground solutions, including:
✅ Soil health improvements to prevent erosion and nutrient loss
✅ Land management techniques that balance productivity with conservation
✅ Collaborative efforts between farmers, conservationists and local authorities to create long-term sustainable change
A shared vision for Windermere’s future
The success of this event underscores the value of partnerships and open dialogue in tackling environmental challenges. Farmers and land managers are at the heart of landscape conservation and by working together, we can create a healthier, more resilient Windermere for future generations.
We extend a huge thank you to everyone who attended, shared their experiences, and contributed to such an engaging and informative evening. With great discussions, fantastic food, and a shared passion for protecting the environment, this was a night to remember.
