10 Years of Water Excellence on Windermere
Lake Windermere Maintains Top Bathing Water Status for a Decade

27 November 2025
Bathing water results issued
This year, Windermere’s Bathing Waters have achieved excellent bathing water status, with all four designated bathing waters maintaining this highest classification in the 2025 results. This makes it 10 years of excellent classifications for Windermere’s bathing waters.
Where bathing waters require improvement, the Environment Agency will continue to investigate the sources of pollution. They will inspect farms and permitted sites, including United Utilities’ assets. They will work with permit holders to bring those sites back into compliance and consider enforcement where required. They are reviewing United Utilities’ spill frequency data for storm overflows discharging to bathing waters and taking action where necessary.
Significant further water company investment as a regulatory requirement over the next 5 years will continue to drive improvements, whilst ongoing work with local communities, including citizen science groups, helps build understanding of the water quality across different bathing waters and seasons. The Environment Agency remains committed to working collaboratively with all those who share the ambition of protecting and enhancing bathing water quality for everyone who uses and enjoys them.
