All Windermere Permitted UU sites inspected in June
Ensuring Water Quality: Inspections Reveal Compliance Progress at Windermere Wastewater Facilities

25 September 2025
As part of the Environment Agency’s ongoing efforts to protect water quality, inspections were carried out at all 14 permitted United Utilities sites within the catchment in June 2025.
The sites comprised 10 wastewater treatment works (WwTWs) and 4 sewage pumping stations, each playing a key role in managing water quality across the area.
Following the inspections:
- 12 sites were found to be fully compliant with their environmental permits.
- 2 sites were identified at Near Sawrey WwTW and Hawkshead pumping station as having minor (Category 3) compliance issues identified.
The Environment Agency is using its regulatory tools to ensure these two non-compliant sites are brought back into compliance with their environmental permits promptly and effectively.
In addition, an investigation is ongoing at the Glebe Road pumping station, reflecting the continued commitment to transparency and high standards in safeguarding Windermere’s waters.
These inspections are part of a wider programme of work to improve water quality and support the long-term health of Windermere. The Love Windermere partnership will continue to share updates and progress as we work together to protect this iconic lake for future generations.
