Windermere’s Bathing Waters Rated Excellent Again
Windermere’s four designated bathing waters have consistently achieved an excellent rating.
26th November 2024
The four designated bathing waters around Windermere—Fellfoot, Lakeside YMCA, Millerground Landing, and Rayrigg Meadow—have once again been rated as excellent in the latest water quality assessments by DEFRA. These sites have maintained this highest rating every year since 2015, reflecting sustained efforts to protect and improve the lake’s water quality.
The classification of bathing water is determined through thorough testing conducted by the Environment Agency, which evaluates E.coli and enterococci concentrations from May to September. Each location receives an annual rating, categorised as excellent, good, sufficient, or poor, based on data collected over a maximum span of four years. The criteria are defined by the Bathing Water Regulations and are based on research from the World Health Organisation.
While this achievement highlights progress, it’s important to understand that the classification does not include assessments of blue-green algae (BGA), a naturally occurring phenomenon in freshwater lakes worldwide. BGA blooms are influenced by factors such as nutrient levels and temperature and can pose risks to people and pets if ingested or exposed to skin. The Love Windermere Partnership continues to address the factors contributing to algal blooms as part of its wider efforts to protect Windermere.
Nigel Wilkinson, Chair of the Love Windermere Partnership, said:
“The Love Windermere Partnership is delighted to see Windermere’s designated bathing waters retaining their excellent rating for another year. This highlights the continued dedication and collaboration between local organisations, communities and businesses to safeguard water quality.
While we celebrate this achievement, we remain fully aware of the ongoing challenges beyond bathing water quality. Complex challenges like the presence of naturally occurring blue-green algae continue to threaten freshwater lakes worldwide, driven by climate change and nutrient levels. However, we believe that Partner-led solutions and the significant investment planned by United Utilities to reduce nutrient levels will be vital in overcoming these challenges and securing Windermere’s future as a safe and welcoming destination for all. “
Maintaining this high standard demonstrates the shared passion of local people, visitors, organisations, and businesses working together through the Love Windermere Partnership. Together, we can take the vital steps needed to safeguard Windermere’s water quality, protect its ecological health, and ensure it remains safe for future generations.
