Understanding Blue-Green Algae in Windermere: New Resources Launched

14 July 2025
As the weather warms up, the potential for blue-green algae (also known as cyanobacteria) to thrive in freshwater lakes increases, impacting locations across the UK, including Windermere. In response to this natural occurrence, the Love Windermere Partnership has introduced a range of new resources designed to inform lake users, residents, and visitors about blue-green algae and what actions they should take if they think they have spotted it.
What’s New?
Dedicated Information Page: One of the key components of this initiative is a newly launched Blue-Green Algae Information Page. This webpage consolidates scientific information in a user-friendly format, covering essential topics such as:
- An overview of blue-green algae and their characteristics.
- The factors that contribute to algal blooms.
- The potential effects on humans, animals, and the wider ecosystem.
- Practical advice for staying safe and reporting sightings of algal blooms.
Additionally, the page provides links to government guidelines, useful reporting tools like the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology’s Bloomin’ Algae app, and resources from the Environment Agency.
Leaflet: To further support lake users, an interactive booklet on Blue-Green Algae has been developed. This resource is packed with crucial facts, safety tips, and visuals that assist in the quick identification of harmful algal blooms. To help everyone and share the information, we have created an A4 foldable leaflet, which is suitable for displaying in a variety of locations, including lakeside areas, community centres, and tourism businesses.
Blog Series: To complement the information page and leaflet, a series of blogs has been released, offering an in-depth look at algae’s role within freshwater ecosystems, providing insights from the Environment Agency’s Chief Scientist Team, and discussing how to reduce nutrient pollution to protect lake health.
Why It Matters
Blue-green algae are a natural component of Windermere’s ecosystem. However, certain conditions can lead to hazardous blooms, posing risks to public health and the environment. As more people engage in recreational activities on the water—such as swimming, paddling, and boating—it becomes crucial for everyone to be equipped with accurate information.
This initiative is part of a broader effort by Love Windermere to enhance water quality, promote transparency, and empower the community with access to reliable and timely information.
