Improving water quality in Troutbeck – helping to protect Windermere

23 September 2025

United Utilities is embarking on the largest investment in water and wastewater infrastructure for a century.  They will be spending more than £13bn over the next five years to protect and enhance over 500km of rivers, lakes and bathing waters whilst safeguarding drinking water supplies for millions of customers.

As part of United Utilities multi-million-pound investment across Windermere, they’re installing a new, temporary, innovative chemical-free sewage treatment process at Troutbeck called FujiClean, which originates from Japan. It is essentially a treatment works in a box so doesn’t require a large amount of construction or heavy engineering which makes it easier to install, particularly in locations where roads are narrow and where sites are tight; also minimising disruption and impact on the local community.

This temporary unit will help bring some immediate improvements while larger, permanent FujiClean units will be put in place next year.

Alongside these improvement works, they are also working to gauge interest in the first-time sewerage process, also known as Section 101A. This gives eligible premises the opportunity to apply for a connection to a new public sewer. This could remove the need for some private septic tanks and mean more properties are directly connected into a public mains sewer.

Properties must meet a list of criteria, all information can be found on our website: First Time Sewerage – United Utilities

United Utilities have received several applications for first-time sewerage in the Troutbeck area; therefore, to make the process easier, they have created a community application form. This will help them to understand the appetite for a mains sewer connection in Troutbeck.

This community wide application is open until the 31st October 2025.
