A passionate group of rowing enthusiasts from the North West who are dedicated to promoting health and wellbeing, teamwork and adventure through the sport of rowing, has created a new recreational rowing tour, ‘RoWindermere’, which will take place on iconic Windermere over the weekend of 14 and 15 September 2024.
RoWindermere is a rowing tour for stable rowing boats, open to participants aged 17 and above who are individual members of British Rowing. The tour will cover approximately 20km on Windermere from Fell Foot to Bowness and back – subject of course to prevailing weather conditions on the day.
The tour is being organised by volunteers from British Rowing’s North West Regional Rowing Council in partnership with Windermere Rowing Club, and is supported by ‘Love Windemere’. The Love Windermere partnership is working to bring about a healthier future for the lake and the surrounding area, balancing the needs of nature, the community and the local economy.
Chair of RoWindermere Roger Heise is keen to see the tour established as an annual event: “RoWindermere sets out to foster a spirit of exploration, teamwork and community while enjoying the beauty of nature from the unique perspective of rowing.”
Nigel Wilkinson, Chair of Love Windermere said: “We are pleased to support this exciting new event to iconic Windermere and hope to create unforgettable experiences for the local and rowing community. “
Crews will be coming from rowing clubs across the north including Lancaster John O’Gaunt, City of Sheffield Rowing Club and Tyne United. Windermere Rowing Club is looking forward to hosting the tour and will be running a chilli and quiz night on 14 September to ensure the crews are fuelled up for their 20k row.
Windermere Rowing Club Chair Sue Gibson is excited about the new tour, “We can’t wait to share our beautiful water and fantastic facilities with rowers from around the UK.”
